I kno this gist is a bit stale, but I just thought I should report it again for our benefit and by "OUR", I mean you and I, yes Iyin, Ibrahim and the rest of you that I have been begging to read my blog.......lol
There is no doubt that that one of Nigeria’s hottest pop stars, D’Banj takes his United Nations title very seriously. Towards the tail end of may, just a few weeks after the koko master spoke at a youth summit in Abuja that was aimed at directing Nigerian Youth towards becoming leaders in national development, the singer led a peace rally at the Niger delta..
The campaign tagged Starz N Fanz of Niger Delta Campaign for Peace was aimed at curbing violence, kidnapping, cultism and pipeline vandalism that has become rampant in the area.
“I was relaxing at a club in Abuja when a friend of mine approached me and said ‘D’Banj you are here relaxing in Abuja. You can not do that in Port Harcourt. I have a wine bar in Port Harcourt but violence has not allowed business to thrive in the land.’ When I heard this, I thought it was necessary to organize this charity movement because a lot of the money we earn from showbiz comes from Port Harcourt, not even Lagos. We need to correct our youths, we do not have to wait for the government to do everything for us, we have to take up some initiatives by ourselves,” says D’Banj who is Nigeria’s first UN Youth Ambassador for Peace
“I want to urge everyone at the Niger Delta to drop your guns and pick up the microphone. Most of the people that have died without taping their potentials are youths. if I had died four years either through cultism or any form of violence ago there world have lost out on the opportunities to attain the heights I have attained do far, ” he adds
The participants at the peaceful rally stormed the streets of the Niger delta carrying wearing t-shirts with slogans like ‘say no to kidnapping, violence and cultism,’ ‘embrace dialogue,’ ‘embrace peace,’ etc. Thousands of fans from the region flooded the streets in support of the campaign.. Celebrities also present at included Professor Linkin, Don Jazzy and the Mo’ Hits Family, among others.
D’Banj who was crowned Youth Ambassador for Peace by the United Nations in 2007 will be unveiling his foundation in August, 2008. The foundation will be geared towards education and empowerment for Youth in Nigeria.
